Founded by Midland, Texas residents in 1973, Rebuilding Together fixes homes, shared community spaces, and nonprofit facilities in disrepair. Originally called Christmas in April, its initial members devoted that month to addressing the home repair needs of local residents. However, as it gained recognition for its work and expanded it services, it rebranded as Rebuilding Together in 1988 and moved its headquarters to Washington, D.C.
As of 2023, Rebuilding Together accomplishes its work through more than 120 affiliates across 38 states. It uses an affiliate area’s annual median income (AMI) to determine candidate eligibility, limiting recipients to those making at most 80 percent of that amount. It performs its work through events like Kick Off to Rebuild, occurring annually before the Super Bowl, where volunteers in the host city for that year’s Super Bowl fix properties owned or rented by local older adults, families with children, or individuals with disabilities. Consistent with its roots, Rebuilding Together’s National Rebuilding Month, held every April, is when a majority of its work takes place, culminating on the last Saturday of the month.
